Anteprima: German Aviation museum with exhibits ranging from Otto Lilienthal's "Hange-gleitter" to the Euro-fighter, "Tyfun"
16th century castle and grand biblical paintings and priceless porcelain collection. At the moment, there is an exhibition of Nativity Scenes from all over the world. Some wierd and wonderful depictions of the Birth of Christ; in metal, wood, fabric, bone, clay, ceramics and paintings. More than 6000 items on display in the Old Castle. The New Castle has Baroque marble and ceilings painted. Hundreds of Oil and canvas paintings of Biblical scenes, battle scenes, hunting scenes, portraits and still life. Take a small folding chair and comfortable shoes and a bottle of water. Be warned, you will be enthralled!

Munich city centre with it's own special attractions is a 20 minute, comfortable train ride from Oberschleissheim. Leave the train at Marienplatz station, which brings you into the town square of the Rathaus (Townhall). Just around the corner is the Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady)with its tall tower. Further, within walking distance is the Asamkirche, a grand example of the Baroque period.

Consigli: Landing at Oberschleissheim is the most convenient way to visit the 3 Castles and Aircraft museum. Landing fee at EDNX is 7 Euros.

Plan to spend the whole day from 0900 to 1800 to visit the town, castles and aviation museum.

Entrance to Aviation Museum is about 7 euros per adult; family and OAP and student concessions are available.

Entrance fee for all the 3 castles is 12.50 euros.

Many decent restaurants and cafes in the middle of town.
EDNX needs PPR by fax as they are limited to 1000 landings per year!
The airfield offers Avgas 100LL and Mogas for rotax engines. Lots of sailplanes, ultralights and light aircraft as well as helicopters. Some maintenance and repair facilities. Friendly club pilots and a little cafe on site.
The train station is within walking distance and you can get to Munich city centre in about 20 minutes from Oberschleissheim to Marienplatz; single journey ticket is 2.40 euros. A family return ticket for 5 is 12.30 euros.
Once in the city centre, you will find open markets, beer halls, churches and grand palaces. All tourist traps, watch out for high prices for every thing!

Olympic Stadium being built

You can visit the Olympic stadium by train from Upminster station, just 1.5 miles away from Damyns Hall airfield.
You can fly in to EGML from anywhere in Europe or UK. the airfield is open all year, during daylight hours. Call 01708 558 740 or 07540 899 690 for PPR. Alternately call on radio 119.550 when 5 miles away and join overhead at 1400 amsl. check windsock and choose runway to land.

Thionville, Yutz airfield

Thionville Yutz (LFGV) airfield is a grass runway very hard to spot as the town has been built up around the runway, with houses right next to the fence! There may be someone on the Radio, but only French speaking. If you wish to land there and need some help, call up Claude Kieger, who owns the Loravia aircraft parts company based on the airfield. www.loravia.com
You can arrange customs clearance if flying in from outside the Schengen countries (UK).
Thionville is a very industrial town, not very pretty from the air! I have not visited the town centre, but probably is boring....

I am told that this airfield may soon be closed down by the council to build more houses; however, there may be a rethink of the plans! Who knows how local governments work!
Food/Dining

Restaurant at Verdun Airfield

Restaurant caters to local working people in nearby village and residents. Pilots from all over France land there for their 10 euro lunch and fuel uptake.

Beware, Avgas 100LL fuel is available only with Totalcard; or cash if club pilot with Totalcard is willing to use his card and take cash.

Landed at Verdun airfield; Restaurant is simple, service superb, food very good, freshly cooked, well served, friendly owner. Very reasonable price. Will certainly land there again just for lunch. Local pilots and residents and local workers go there for their lunch... that's saying something in France.
Good food, quick friendly service and reasonable prices, no pretensions! What more can one ask for in French restaurant.

From the airfield, you can visit Verdun town, where there are memorials to the War dead from the Great War 1914 - 1918. The town is about 10 minutes by taxi; you could probably find a club pilot willing to give you a lift into town.

Not too far to the south of Verdun airfield you could fly to Nancy Essey airfield. Nancy was the capital of the kingdom of Lorraine. The city centre has the grand palace of Lorraine with its square and boulevard.

Nancy Essey Airfield

A town worth visiting for its historic importance as the capital of Lorraine. Grand palace, very pretty town square full of good restaurants. Some are tourist traps with high prices; others are more local restaurants and working cafe's with very high standard of cuisine, frequented by locals.
The town centre is a short taxi ride from the airfield; cost about 12 euros for the cab one way. Spend about 4 hours for lunch and walkabout and you can be back to your aircraft for a flight either back to London or elsewhere into Europe.
Airfield has Avgas and customs and flight planning facilities; be aware that lunch time 1200 to 1500 is taken seriously in France and you may not find anyone around the airfield at that time!

Schleissheim Castle, north Munich

Grand Castle with superb collection of Biblical Paintings (I call it "Biblical Manga"; that's what people from all over the region came to view and contemplate deeply)
There are 3 Castles in Oberschleissheim. The Old Castle holds a wonderful collection of Nativity Scenes from all over the world. Very interesting tableaus made from wood, fabric, ceramics, beads, metal, porcelain, bone, and much more. There are exhibits of tableaus made by devout Catholics from all over the world.
From Munich centre (Marienplatz or Hauptbanhoff), take train S-1 to Oberschleissheim. Castle is about 10 minutes easy walking distance from station.

This is the oldest airfield in Belgium.
Restaurant has a good menu, large portions and reasonable prices. Very busy on week ends, long wait for service, but worth waiting for food.
